To All The Boys I've Loved Before (2018)
A short musing on this sweet little rom-com.
Based on the book by Jenny Han, To All The Boys I've Loved Before is based around a 16-year-old girl called Lara Jane (played by Lana Condor) whose secret love letters end up being sent to her crushes, which ends up in havoc.
So let me set the scene. It's Saturday night and I'm home alone thinking about what to watch on Netflix. I consider continuing binging Queer Eye because you know, It's fabulous, but then I think about a film I kept seeing being advertised last year. In the mood for a rom-com, I put on this 'chick flick'.
Man, I loved it. I am a soppy person and all, but I thought this film was so cute. All of the characters within it are adorable and the story is easy to follow. I watch a lot of deep and heavy films, so this was a nice refresher.
Following Lara Jane, you see her seemingly normal life. Albeit in a huge house. In junior year, it shows her talking about her past crushes and how to remember the way she felt about them, she wrote a love letter to them – which was never supposed to be sent to them. Her sister Kitty (played by Anna Cathcart), has a different idea however. She sends the letters out in the hope that her sister gets a boyfriend who falls for her. As the film continues, Peter (one of her crushes) agrees to make a contract with her in order to get back at his ex. In the contract, he and Lara Jane will pretend to be a couple. But, obviously the inevitable happens and they fall for one another. That's basically the story...there are a few twists and turns of course but yeah.
Ok so it may be a liiiiiiittle predictable. But that doesn't take away how cute and easy to watch the film is. I loved the romance and its innocence. And yes ok many may stereotype it as a girls film but actually, thinking about it, I think guys would like it too. It's funny and carries much of the charm of 80's rom-coms such as Pretty in Pink or Sixteen Candles (which is mentioned in the film) – which I also adore.
