Kong: Skull Island (2017)
When I first saw that they were doing yet another King Kong film, to be perfectly honest I wasn't running to the cinema to see it. As you can probably tell I'm not the biggest fan of remakes or retellings, as often I just want to see original films and not the same basic plot hashed out again.
So what did this 2017 version have to offer? Great cast-check. Amazing CG-check. America thinking that they are the best and that they rule the world...yep, check. This film has many good points - from brilliant acting with Hollywood heavyweights Samuel L Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, John C. Reilly, Brie Larson and John Goodman to the easy to watch action-filled plot.
But, it doesn't bring anything new to the table. The film's plot surrounds a group of scientists, a photographer, explorers and soldiers that travel to an unexplored island and are met with all types of monsters (sounds sort of familiar right?). From Kong (who, in the end you actually begin to root for) to a dinosaur-looking creature that kills quite a few of the team in a very gory way. As mentioned above, the CG really is amazing. Whilst watching the film I couldn't help but say "wow that looks cool" or "wow that would have cost a lot to create", so in terms of visuals, you will be blown away.
If you are looking for a film which is an easy watch, and a typical blockbuster then you will definitely enjoy this. However, and I guess this was intended, the arrogant US soldiers make you want Kong to win and to show them that it is his island. The film is gory and extremely tense at times - which is definitely a plus. Brie Larson also gains a connection with Kong, earning his trust - which is exactly the same as what happened to Naomi Watts's character in the 2005 version.
As always, I don't want to give a lot away about this, but what I will say is that this film was good -- don't get me wrong but nothing to shout from the rooftops about.
Having said that, this scene below is absolutely incredible. Goddamit Samuel.
