Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)
WARNING: THE FOLLOWING REVIEW OR IN THIS CASE COLLECTION OF THOUGHTS MAY OFFEND PEOPLE WHO LOVED THIS.
As with the majority of children who were born in the 90’s, when I got the Harry Potter books I also got the book of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
I do credit this re-imagination for how incredibly fantastic they took a book which only has descriptions of creatures and transformed it into a feature-length film.
Set seventy years before Harry goes to Hogwarts, Eddie Redmayne takes the stage in the ‘adaptation’ as Newt Scamander, an english wizard writer who journeys to New York in order to rescue a creature. Along the way he meets Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston), an auror at the Magical Congress of the United States of America and Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler), a muggle who works at a canning factory, among a number of other intriguing characters.
The story is fantastical with some amazing action scenes. It is more than fair to say that the development of technology depicts magic brilliantly- far better than in Harry Potter. Although of-course that is a lot older.
In short, the three take on a magical adventure which when it is moving swiftly is undeniably exciting and intriguing, although I have to admit I thought that the in-between was rather dull. There is of course a villan causing havoc throughout the film; (and I wont say the actor for those who havent seen it) with a surprise twist at the end.
A brilliant cast (although Redmayne is his usual awkward mumbling self), it is very different to its Harry Potter counterpart. although I loved the references throughout it. I didn’t know what to expect, but to be honest I was not blown away. I loved the first Harry Potter films and it may just be nostalgia for them, but i think they are superior to this.
Despite being visually spectacular and comical at times I was unfortunately (and I hate to say this) a little disappointed.
