Deadpool 2 (2018)
I’m going to be honest with you. I didn’t think that I would like the first Deadpool. Seeing Ryan Reynolds in a role which wasn’t a soppy male lead in a rom-com (not that I was a massive fan of that) and a film that seemed to (also not sounding like a prude) just rely on swearing/immature gags, didn’t seem up my street. Despite the fact I went through a stage of being obsessed with the American Pie series.
But I decided to give it a go. I was pleasantly surprised and found the quick wit of Reynolds and the silliness of the plot hilarious. So, when I saw they were making a sequel I knew I wanted to go and see it. I just hoped that it would be as good as the first one...and...I’m happy to say it was. Or, in a way, even better.
The sequel follows the bad-mouthed masked anti-hero, as he tries to protect a young mutant (Julian Dennison) from turning to the dark side. Together with fellow rogues, they try to stop a time-travelling cyborg (Cable, played by Josh Brolin) from killing the child. [All will be revealed once you watch it of course, I’m not about those major spoilers ;)].
As you’d expect, there are plenty of hilarious scenes throughout with Deadpool creating a team called the ‘X-Force’ (consisting of a range of fabulous actors, from Terry Crews to Bill Skarsgard), that results in some hilarious antics. He also goes back to the X-mansion - making fun of the lack of X-men the studio could get once again.
What you don’t expect however (trying to step on eggshells here and not give any spoilers), is that there are some heart-wrenching scenes. You don’t see them coming (well, not really), and they make the film far more human.
It’s a really hard film to write about without giving anything away, but what I will say is that, it’s fabulous. From start to finish, it’s quick wit, amazing action scenes and break-the-fourth-wall moments make it such a unique ‘superhero’ movie.
[Also, Zazie Beetz is fabulous in the role of ‘Domino’, a badass mutant with the power of luck]
[Another side note: as with all Marvel films, make sure you stay till after the credits, it’s bloody hilarious and I now love Ryan Reynolds]
So yeah, go and see it - you won’t be disappointed.
