Arrival (2016)
My very-informal scribblings on this stunning masterpiece.
Intriguing, Visually beautiful and mind-bending is just three ways you could describe Denis Villeneuve’s (Sicario, Prisoners) 2016 Sci-Fi/Mystery/Thriller.
I’ve got to admit, I struggled at parts to understand what was happening. With a brilliant cast (from Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner to Forest Whitaker) the story is at times confusing, but brilliant. Wrapped up in mystery, the story (in brief) is about a linguist (Amy Adams) who is brought together with a group of scientists/mathematicians/generic US government people who always appear in disaster films-to try to make contact with the alien life-force that have landed on earth.
Communication of course begins and well the rest is up for you to find out. It’s fantastically intelligent and one to be concentrated on.
Now I’m not going to give a lot away here, simply because I highly recommend this film so do not want to spoil it for those who haven’t seen it, but all I’m going to say is that it has a fantastic twist at the end. I didn’t see it coming. I admit that at first when it began and it announced that twelve spaceships had landed in different locations across Earth all I thought of was Independence Day. Now I didn’t expect Jeff Goldblum or Will Smith to appear and drive an aircraft into these bizarre looking-pod-like spaceships and use some ridiculous virus, I just of course made the link as a similar thing happened in it. Thank god it was very different.
It’s dramatic, heartbreaking and at times funny, it isn’t the typical alien invasion cheesy flick, its clever and as I mentioned above is spectacular visually; I was blown away with how amazing the special effects were.
I would 100% recommend this.
